The term Surya Namaskar comes from "Surya" meaning Sun and "Namaskar" meaning to bow down. The Sun, our primary source of energy, influences our health, vitality, and overall well-being. This is why the traditional sequence of postures called Sun Salutation is practiced widely.
Sun Salutation is a series of twelve physical postures that flex and stretch the spinal column through its maximum range, providing a profound stretch to the whole body. These postures are performed with synchronised breathing, each posture counteracting the preceding one, maintaining a balance between flexion and extension.
Sun Salutation is perfect for beginners, with simpler variations available for those who may find some poses challenging. This sequence boosts energy in the body and can be included in flow yoga sequences. It's also an excellent warm-up to prepare the body for more intense yoga poses.
